Environmental issues are threatening the future use of MTBE (methyl-tert-butyl ether) in gasoline in the United States. Since the late 1990s, concerns have arisen over ground and drinking water contamination with MTBE due to leaking of gasoline from underground storage tanks and the exhaust from two-cycle engines.

Fourth Edition
Ruth F. Weiner and Robin Matthews
Everything seems to matter in environmental engineering. The social sciences and humanities, as well as the natural sciences, can be as important to the practice of environmental engineering as classical engineering skills. Many environmental engineers find this combination of skills and disciplines, with its inherent breadth, both challenging and rewarding.

Second Edition
Sami Matar
Lewis F. Hatch
Petrochemicals in general are compounds and polymers derived directly or indirectly from petroleum and used in the chemical market. Among the major petrochemical products are plastics, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, detergents, and nitrogen fertilizers. Many other important chemical industries such as paints, adhesives, aerosols, insecticides, and pharmaceuticals may involve one or more petrochemical products within their manufacturing steps.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING FLUID MECHANICS
Second Edition
Ron Darby
Engineering is much more than just applied science and math. Although science and math are important tools of the trade, it is the engineer’s ability to use these tools (and others) along with considerable judgment and experiment to ‘‘make things work’’—i.e., make it possible to get reasoable answers to real problems with (sometimes) limited or incomplete information. A key aspect of ‘‘judgment and experience’’ is the ability to organize and utilize information obtained from one system and apply it to analyze or design similar systems on a different scale.

ESSENSIAL MATLAB For Engineers and Scientist
Third Edition
Brian Hahn
Daniel T. Valentine
This book presents the MATLAB computer programming system as a problemsolving tool for scientists and engineers who have no prior knowledge of computer programming. It is based on a teach-yourself approach; readers are frequently invited to experiment for themselves in order to discover how particular constructs work. The text was originally written as a companion to a hands-on course at the University of Cape Town. Most of the students taking the course had little or no computing experience and came from disadvantaged backgrounds. Consequently the book assumes that readers have no knowledge of computing, unlike most similar books on MATLAB.

MATLAB is a high-level technical computing language and interactive environment for algorithm development, data visualization, data analysis, and numerical computation. Using MATLAB, you can solve technical computing problems faster than with traditional programming languages, such as C, C++, and Fortran. – The MathWorks, Inc. MATLAB is more than a fancy calculator; it is an extremely useful and versatile tool. Even if you know only a little about MATLAB, you can use it to accomplish wonderful things. The hard part, however, is figuring out which of the hundreds of commands, scores of help pages, and thousands of items of documentation you need to look at to start using it quickly and effectively.

BEGINNING CHEMISTRY
Third Edition
David E. Goldberg
This book is designed to help students do well in their first chemistry course, especially those who have little or no chemistry background. It can be used effectively in a course preparatory to a general college chemistry course as well as in a course in chemistry for liberal arts students. It should also provide additional assistance to students in the first semester of a chemistry course for nurses and others in the allied health fields. It will prove to be of value in a high school chemistry course and in a general chemistry course for majors.

Students of chemical engineering soon discover that the data used are expressed in a great variety of different units, so that quantities must be converted into a common system before proceeding with calculations. Standardisation has been largely achieved with the introduction of the Systeme International d'Unites (SI)(1'2) to be discussed later, which is used throughout all the Volumes of this series of books. This system is now in general use in Europe and is rapidly being adopted throughout the rest of the world, including the USA where the initial inertia is now being overcome.

It is now 47 years since Volume 2 was first published in 1955, and during the intervening time the profession of chemical engineering has grown to maturity in the UK, and worldwide; the Institution of Chemical Engineers, for instance, has moved on from its 33rd to its 80th year of existence. No longer are the heavy chemical and petroleum-based industries the main fields of industrial applications of the discipline, but chemical engineering has now penetrated into areas, such as pharmaceuticals, health care, foodstuffs, and biotechnology, where the general level of sophistication of the products is much greater,

Solutions to the Problems in Volume 1
J. R. Backhurst and J. H. Marker
Each of the volumes of the Chemical Engineering Series includes numerical examples to illustrate the application of the theory presented in the text. In addition, at the end of each volume, there is a selection of problems which the reader is invited to solve in order to consolidate his (or her) understanding of the principles and to gain a better appreciation
of the order of magnitude of the quantities involved. This book, which is a successor to the old Volume 4, is an attempt to satisfy this demand as far as the problems in Volume 1 are concerned.

Chemical Engineering Design
R. K. Sinnott
This chapter is an introduction to the nature and methodology of the design process, and its application to the design of chemical manufacturing processes. This section is a general, somewhat philosophical, discussion of the design process; how a designer works. The subject of this book is chemical engineering design, but the methodology of design described in this section applies equally to other branches of engineering design.
